Large Scale Caustic Soda Plant

Large Scale Caustic Soda Plant

A Large Scale Caustic Soda Plant is an industrial production facility designed to manufacture sodium hydroxide (NaOH) at a high production capacity through the chlor-alkali process. In modern plants, membrane-cell electrolysis is widely used to convert purified sodium chloride brine into caustic soda, chlorine gas, and hydrogen gas.

Asia Chemical Engineering Co., Ltd. is one of the most reliable manufacturers and suppliers of large scale caustic soda plant in China. Please rest assured to wholesale cost-efficient large scale caustic soda plant from our factory. Good service and reasonable price are available.

The production capacity of a large plant is determined according to the required NaOH output, downstream chlorine demand, available electrical power, raw material supply, cooling-water conditions, product concentration, and site infrastructure.

For example, commercial chlor-alkali projects can reach several hundred tonnes per day of caustic soda production; one 2026 project publicly described a 400 TPD membrane-based chlor-alkali plant, illustrating the scale possible for modern industrial installations.

How Does a Large Scale Caustic Soda Plant Work?

The basic reaction is the electrolysis of sodium chloride solution:

    2NaCl + 2H₂O → 2NaOH + Cl₂ + H₂

The process begins with salt and water. Salt is dissolved to prepare brine, and impurities that could affect the membrane-cell electrolyzer are removed before electrolysis. The purified brine is then fed into the anode compartment of the membrane electrolyzer.

Inside the electrolyzer, an ion-exchange membrane separates the anode and cathode compartments. Chloride ions are oxidized at the anode to form chlorine gas, while water is reduced at the cathode to produce hydrogen and hydroxide ions. Sodium ions migrate through the membrane and combine with hydroxide ions to form sodium hydroxide solution.

The caustic soda leaving the electrolyzer is typically a relatively dilute solution compared with commercial 50% NaOH. If 50% caustic soda is required, the solution passes through a concentration section, normally using evaporation equipment.

The chlorine and hydrogen generated during electrolysis are separately collected and processed. Depending on the project configuration, chlorine can be used as a feedstock for downstream chlorinated chemicals, while hydrogen can be recovered as a fuel or chemical feedstock.

    Main Equipment

A large-scale caustic soda plant is not a single machine. It is an integrated process system consisting of several major equipment groups.

    Process Section Typical Equipment
Salt Handling Salt Storage, Salt Dissolver, Salt Conveyor
Brine Preparation Brine Saturator, Brine Tank, Pumps
Brine Purification Reactors, Clarifiers, Filters, Ion Exchange Units
Brine Dechlorination Dechlorination Tower, Pumps, Gas Separation Equipment
Electrolysis Membrane Electrolyzers, Cell Stacks, Rectifiers
Electrical System Transformer, Rectifier Transformer, DC Bus System
Chlorine Processing Chlorine Cooler, Dryer, Compressor, Liquefier
Hydrogen Processing Separator, Cooler, Compressor, Gas Treatment Equipment
Caustic Concentration Evaporator, Heat Exchanger, Condenser
Storage Caustic Soda Tanks, Chlorine Storage, Product Pumps
Utilities Cooling Tower, DM Water System, Steam System, Air System
Control DCS, PLC, Instrumentation, Safety Interlock System

For a large plant, the electrolyzer is closely integrated with the rectifier and DC electrical system because electrolysis represents a major part of the plant's electricity demand.

    FAQ:

    1. What is a Large Scale Caustic Soda Plant?

A Large Scale Caustic Soda Plant is an industrial facility designed for high-volume production of sodium hydroxide (NaOH), normally using the chlor-alkali membrane-cell process. The plant integrates brine preparation, brine purification, membrane electrolysis, chlorine and hydrogen treatment, caustic soda concentration, storage, utilities, electrical systems, and process control.

2.How does a Large Scale Caustic Soda Plant work?

The plant first prepares and purifies sodium chloride brine. The purified brine is then fed into membrane electrolyzers, where direct current drives the electrolysis reaction. The process produces sodium hydroxide, chlorine, and hydrogen simultaneously. The NaOH solution can subsequently be concentrated through an evaporation system when a higher commercial concentration is required.

    3. What is the main raw material for a Large Scale Caustic Soda Plant?

The primary raw material is sodium chloride (NaCl), usually supplied as industrial salt or prepared brine. Water and electricity are also essential inputs. The salt is dissolved in water to produce brine, which must undergo purification before entering the membrane electrolyzer because impurities such as calcium and magnesium can affect membrane-cell operation.
