Soda ash is sodium carbonate.

Sodium carbonate, molecular weight 105.99. The purity of chemicals is more than 99.5% (mass fraction), also known as soda ash, but it is classified as salt, not alkali. Also known as soda or soda ash in international trade. It is an important organic chemical raw material, mainly used in the production of flat glass, glass products and ceramic glaze. It is also widely used in daily washing, acid neutralization and food processing.

There are two methods to product sodium carbonate, i.e. ammonia-soda process (Solvay process) and combined-soda process (Hou’s process).

1.Ammonia-soda process (Solvay process)

Use brine or crude salt, limestone as raw materials, after going through a series sections like brine purification, limestone calcination, carbonization, separation, rectification and so on, producing industrial grade sodium carbonate Na2CO3＞99.5%. 2.Combined-soda process (Hou’s process)

Use crude salt and limestone as raw materials, after going through a series sections like brine purification, limestone calcination, carbonization, separation, salting out and so on, producing industrial grade sodium carbonate (NaCO3＞99.5%), meanwhile producing industrial grade ammonium chloride (NH4CL＞99.5%), which is the matched device with synthesis ammonia, realizing the diversification of product, avoiding the emission of solid pollutant. Properties of Sodium Carbonate

1. Solubility

Sodium carbonate is easily soluble in water and glycerol. At 20 ℃, 20 grams of sodium carbonate can be dissolved in every 100 grams of water, and the solubility is the largest at 35.4 ℃. 49.7 grams of sodium carbonate can be dissolved in 100 grams of water, slightly soluble in absolute ethanol, and insoluble in propanol. The solution is alkaline and can make phenolphthalein turn red.

2. Stability

Strong stability, but can also be decomposed at high temperature to generate sodium oxide and carbon dioxide.

3. Hydrolysis reaction

Due to the hydrolysis of sodium carbonate in the aqueous solution, the ionized carbonate ions combine with the hydrogen ions in the water to form bicarbonate ions, resulting in the reduction of hydrogen ions in the solution and the remaining ionized hydroxide ions, so the pH of the solution is alkaline.
